Is distilled water safe to drink?

If you’re reading this article, you’ve probably heard a thing or two about distilled water. But what does distilled really mean? And is distilled water safe for drinking? Well, in essence, to distill water simply means to separate the water from other elements in the water through boiling. For instance, the process of distilling sea water into fresh water has been around for centuries, even as early as 200 A.D. when it was first clearly written about by Greek philosopher Alexander of Aphrodisias. The ancient Greeks were pretty smart people, and this process has stood the test of time. So that is reason enough to believe that the Greeks were on to something!

So let’s describe the process of distillation. It can actually be as simple as boiling water in a pot and letting the steam collect in a separate container. Water is distilled on a commercial level using large machines called stills. The stillls heat the water until it becomes vapor, then they condense the vapor into a separate area away from the elements left behind. Stills are often used to distill sea water for people serving overseas, as well as to distill water sold in grocery stores.

What are the benefits of water distiller? Well from the above mentioned process, you can see that distillation removes substances in water that could be harmful such as aluminum. Some concerns have been brought up because since distilled water is so pure, it contains none of the naturally occurring trace elements found in natural spring water. However for someone who has a healthy diet and takes adequate vitamin supplements, this shouldn’t be a problem. There is also a concern that distilled water doesn’t contain fluoride, which helps prevent tooth decay. If you have this concern about drinking distilled water, it’s helpful to know that fluoride can be found in just about all toothpastes. Therefore brushing as often as your dentist recommends, as well as making regular dentist visits, should be enough to keep your teeth healthy.

So all in all, distilled water is perfectly safe for drinking. If you live in an area where you’d like to avoid drinking tap water, distilled water would be a good option. It’s an inexpensive, tried and true way to keep you and your family hydrated.
